Held annually in Oklahoma City since 2004, the Oklahoma Folklife Festival promotes education and active conservation of folk traditions in the state. A folk tradition is any "activity of the people" learned by oral instruction, or by participating in the community where the activity takes place as part of the lifestyle of the people.

Slapout tune by D-Mac that sums up the feelings of unplanned and uncontrollable lateness.

Little did we know that a few ladies sitting in the audience could sing a lot better than we could! Would love to put their duet with Jimmy Redshirt on "Margaritaville" here, but youtube copyright will not allow it. Happy holidays from us!

11-year-old blues artist, Blue Fire Foley, plays Son House's "Preachin' Blues" at the 2006 Script 2 Screen Blues Festival in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Blue Fire was asked to play by Oklahoma bluesman, DC Minner, who received an award for lifetime achievements in the arts. While some have commented that Robert Johnson originally recorded "Preachin' Blues", common knowledge among blues historians indicates that Johnson was only a harmonica player when he would watch Son House play in the juke joints in Mississippi. Catch Son House's "Preachin' Blues" on Father of the Folk Blues (Columbia 2417), and then check out Johnson's version on any release of his music. You'll see that Son House is listed as the author on his records, and that Robert Johnson is listed as the author on his records. So, who came first is academic, but less important than the fact that young people today can still be inspired by this music.

A quick edit of the 2012 Iowa Tribe of OK Powwow to see how it looks overall, and to figure out how it can be sculpted down to 49 minutes for showing on RSU-TV in the fall and spring on my televised classes. More titles and head staff will be added later... I always enjoy the Iowa dance!

Savage Country VII: While Tulsa Union High School enjoyed a thrilling victory over Broken Arrow in the 2011 6A High School Playoffs, the fact remains that citizens, students, and faculty must endure the embarrassing racist epithet of Redskin, and stereotypical American Indian imagery to represent their team. What a shame the school district can not really enjoy the win that resulted from tremendous hard work on the part of the team, coaches, parents, band, cheer squads, boosters, and fans. No matter what, the school is still stuck with a racist mascot, ossified in their stubbornness that predates Native Americans being citizens of the United States, not to mention the entire Civil Rights Movement. Come on Union, it's the 21st century!

Quotes from the January 30, 2009 press conference in support of OK Senate Bill 765, which seeks to eliminate the use of savages and redskins as sports team mascot names in Oklahoma public schools, and further raise awareness about the misuse of American Indian imagery as sports mascots.

Tommy Crook is one of the best living guitar players, period, in my humble opinion. Chet Atkins once called Mr. Crook the best guitar player he knew, on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, no less. Better yet, anyone can go check out Tommy Crook every Friday night for the price of a nice Thai meal in Tulsa, Oklahoma, at Lanna Thai restaurant from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. (as of March 2007). A lot of us play around on guitar, and more yet can really play the guitar, but few are in the league of this guy. Another guitarist I would put right up there with Tommy Crook is Gary Lucas, who is also featured on this channel.

Using a traditional Cheyenne-Arapaho story, Joan Candyfire illustrates how traditional thinking can apply to the challenges and hazards of substance abuse and navigating everyday life.
